Not In Our Name

a demonstration against war in Iraq
Central Park, New York - October 6, 2002

Friend of LBO John Mage put it best - a spirited, edumenical, and youthful gathering to protest the imminent war against Iraq. It was one of at least 28 across the U.S. on October 6 and 7, organized by Not In Our Name, a group founded in New York just after 9/11. Here's a taste of what it looked like.

One of many variations on the flag, which are not yet illegal.

Mao More Than Ever, a tagline of the Revolutionary Communist Party. An RCPer was seen at the edges of the demo arguing furiously with some pro-Tibet kids, who didn't like his deployment of the word "feudal" to describe the Dalai Lama's regime. Appropriately enough, the sectarian parties kept mostly to the fringes.

Molly Klopot of the Women's International League for Peace & Freedom, one of the organizers of the day. Democracy Now's Amy Goodman can be seen, notebook in hand, over her shoulder.

Mira Nair, film director, who said "monologue is not the answer"  Tim Robbins, denouncing fundamentalism of all kinds, religious and business Susan Sarandon, who displayed admirable skepticism about Hillary Clinton Sami Al-Arian, computer science prof fired by the University of South Florida for alleged terrorist sympathies Lynne Stewart, lawyer arrested in April for alleged terrorist sympathies  Kent State student identified only as "Laura," issuing a big "fuck you" to the silence and passivity of her PlayStation generation

Miles Solay of NION leading a youth delegation leading the crowd in the pledge of resistance.
